The Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage, which attracts hundreds of thousands of participants every year, is not only a major religious event but also brings about significant issues regarding waste and leftover food. Today (18th), Environment Minister Peng Chi-ming personally led colleagues to join the “Pink Express” procession, taking concrete action to promote a “Green Pilgrimage.” He called upon both believers and catering groups to practice food appreciation, waste reduction at the source, and resource recycling, allowing religious faith and environmental sustainability to go hand in hand. On-site, he urged pilgrims to cherish food, bring their own reusable items, and sort waste.
Mazu’s compassion protects the earth, and believers should respond with concrete actions. During the procession, many believers spontaneously set up waste facilities and recycling sorting stations. Minister Peng urged the implementation of three key action items:
- Cherish Food and Resources: Take only what you can consume and do not waste food.
- Bring Your Own Supplies: Carry reusable utensils, water cups, and shopping bags to reduce single-use items.
- Implement Sorting: Properly sort garbage and ensure that cigarette butts do not touch the ground.
Peng Chi-ming pointed out that along the route, more and more Xiangdengjiao (pilgrims) have spontaneously brought their own eco-friendly cups and cleaned up trash along the way, demonstrating the positive power of transforming faith into action. He emphasized: “What we are picking up is not just trash, but our responsibility to protect the environment. By following in Mazu’s footsteps, we can also walk the cleanest and most solemn path.”
